Joan Costa is an editor, anthropologist and social and cultural researcher, born and resident in Ibiza. Joan publishes tourist and street maps of the islands of Ibiza and Formentera for 20 years. He has collaborated, among other publications, in the Secret Seeker tourist guides of the Balearic Islands.
In recent years, his work focuses on documenting and cataloging the extensive network of public roads in Ibiza and Formentera and promoting their recovery and protection. His projects also include the realization of a cultural and historical atlas of the Pitiusan Islands.
His experience in cartographic publications, together with his training in social sciences have provided him with a thorough knowledge of the territory of the islands, a solid methodological base and tools to deal in a complex way with the analysis of social and cultural problems.
His research is based on an ethnographic perspective and an open and representative approach that promotes citizen participation. The studies are based on an exhaustive documentation reviewing files, maps and other publications, in addition to the collection of data on the spot with local informants. This information is systematized and analyzed to create innovative proposals that facilitate territorial planning and the management of public goods.
Among his most recent works are the inventory of public roads in the municipality of Sant Josep de sa Talaia (currently in progress) or the Tourist Map of Ibiza and Formentera.
Joan Costa also actively participates in different citizen groups, such as the association for the protection of public roads Plataforma per la Catalogació dels Camins Públics d’Eivissa or the neighborhood collective Jesús en Transició, which carries out different initiatives in the population of Jesús (Santa Eulària des Riu, Eivissa) to improve its sustainability and coexistence.
